The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 & Its Impact on Branford

On Wednesday, September 21, 1938 the Great New England Hurricane devastated the entire region. At Branford, the Category 3 storm hit at 3:30 p.m. with 80-100 mph winds, 30 foot waves, toppling many trees. Nearly 500 homes were damaged and ten people died. In New England there were 600 deaths, devastation of the shoreline and $400 million in damage. Jane P.
